A Tango, A Tangle (607 words) by thesavagesabretooth

Summary: It’s Clay and Apollo’s date night, and Clay ends up giving Apollo advice about his other relationships regarding his situationship with Klavier, and his unresolved feelings about Kristoph.

Clay poked his head into Apollo’s kitchen, where Apollo was busy cutting vegetables.

“Your phone’s been beeping, ‘Pollo. Somebody’s trying to get a hold of you.”

Apollo wiped his hands on a towel and turned after setting the knife down. He held out a hand for the phone. “Did you see who it was?”

“Didn’t look,” he shook his head as he passed it to him. Apollo sighed, glancing at it, and put it aside without answering. “It’s Klavier. He was asking if I was free tonight.”

“I can’t believe you’ve got an actual rockstar pining for your attention, and you’re barely into him.” Clay shook his head and came over on Apollo’s side, slipping his arm around his shoulders. “If it was me I’d at least be flattered.”

Apollo blushed and nuzzled his boyfriend’s neck. “I am flattered, you know? We’ve even been on a few dates. But Klavier is… a lot, you know? And besides, being around him makes it hard not to think of….”

He trailed off, but Clay knew what he was thinking. “Your old boss?”

Apollo’s posture stiffened, and he nodded against Clay’s shoulder. “Yeah. I mean, he’s his brother, right? and they look a lot alike, but he’s completely different.”

“And you’re still really hung up on Mr. Gavin,” Clay observed. He stroked his fingers through Apollo’s short hair.

“How could I not be? He was the first person besides you to really give me a chance. To believe in me, and try to build me up, you know?” Apollo sighed with frustration as he leaned into Clay’s touch. “But then everything happened! And he’s gone, and I sure as hell haven’t gotten any closure, and I don’t know what to do! I still find myself leaning on his advice all the time, but in the back of my mind, I worry it’s going to make me a bad person somehow.”

“I mean, just cause he killed people doesn’t mean all his advice was bad, I guess,” Clay considered, thoughtfully, running his tongue over his teeth. “And it’s not like you’ve just forgiven him for killing people, right?”

“NO! I mean…no. Not really?” he frowned as his objection turned to mush. “I haven’t forgiven him, but I keep trying to think of ways that it might not be his fault, or might not be as bad as it looks…”

Clay sighed, and tugged Apollo’s chin up to give him a soft kiss. “You’re really hung up on him, ‘Pollo. It’s okay. We’ll figure it out.”

Apollo sighed and put his arms around Clay’s shoulders, his head against his chest. “Thanks, Clay. I don’t deserve you.”

“Yeah you do. And you have me anyway. I love you, ‘Pollo. No matter how many weird boyfriend troubles you have. But I need you to do something for me.”

Apollo looked up at him. “Yeah?”

“I need you to actually text Klavier Gavin back like an adult tonight and tell him that you’re busy instead of leaving him hanging.”

Apollo sighed again and nodded. “Yeah, you’re right, I do. It’s just hard because I know he’ll be doing the puppy dog face.”

“What, you mean like you do when I’m busy?” Clay teased. “Just tell him you’ll see him again soon. You do want to see him again, right?”

“Yeah… I mean, I think so at least. I wish it wasn’t so complicated.”

“We’ll figure it out,” Clay repeated. “Now come on, text him back and I’ll help you get dinner ready. I don’t want to wait all night to start the movie.”

Apollo laughed and picked up the phone. “Yes sir, Captain Terran.”
