watching the same dash tremble in a mixture of fear and outrage about the recent rightwing “groomer panic” and then get all defensive about hey john green really did have creepy groomer vibes and we were right to sexually harass him en masse is sure An Experience
in the end i find it hard to care about john green personally that much. i liked some of the stuff he and his brother did, so its kind of sad to see him bullied like that, but after all that he was still a hugely successful and stable author, hes not dead or homeless or jailed or deeply irreparably mentally ill bc of it
but he was just the biggest example of a whole fucking proglib witch hunt culture with this site as its epicentre, and the victims it did succeed in destroying you dont hear about as much as the ones with the resources to survive it for reasons so obvious i shouldnt have to spell them out. and if yr a proponent of that culture then whatever yr reasons are for opposing groomer panics cant be the actual reasons they are bad
I think this is what a lot of people don’t get about witch hunts and moral frenzies in general. They will point to the relatively privileged and powerful people who survived getting dogpiled and say, “look, they’re fine, obviously our so-called witch hunt wasn’t that destructive,” but the actual casualties of it tend to be invisible because they are the people with far less power.
