[ID: Digital drawing of Captain Lars carrying his previous, orange-skinned self. They’re both laughing, but OG Lars is also crying. The background is a dark, grayish pink, and a little white heart is drawn between the two Larses.
Inspired by Change Your Mind, where Steven and his gem self fuse again. /End ID]
“I’ve always been me.”
I’ve seen so many drawings with Pink Lars and OG Lars, but practically none of them really… respect nor embrace the latter, whether in a jokey manner or not (e.g. all the “I’m you but better” variations). Most people believe that Lars only got better after he turned pink. Some say Lars “redeemed” himself through his death.
I’m not saying those who began liking Lars after the Wanted special are wrong. The point is, Lars never had a “redemption arc”, because he never needed one to begin with. He’s not like Peridot or Jasper or the freaking Diamonds, and yet back in the day fans used to think Lars was worse than all of them combined.
But Lars got better before he turned pink. He changed slowly and subtly throughout the show. Every time you see him again, he’s a little different. And right before Homeworld, he’s open with Sadie and Steven, and even has a heart-to-heart with the latter – and yet another one when they’re trapped. Lars is not pink here. He isn’t pink when he stands up for the Off Colors, either.
Lars didn’t deserve to die. Lars always mattered. He always had good in him. And I’m done rejecting his beginning, his background. OG Lars and Pink Lars are not two completely different people. They’re the same, and both deserve love.
