Sometimes when you are writing a scene you will want to go past the visuals that can be seen, and describe a deeper sensory experience for your reader.
Here are some thoughts for sensations you can add to your writing:
✋ How does something feel against a character’s skin, or under their feet? Is there an unusual or interesting texture or sensation? What emotions does your character derive from this sense of touch?
👃 What scents can the character smell? Do they have something interesting to say about the character’s surroundings? Are the smells subtle and in the background, or are they overpowering and present?
😛 Related to smell, is there something the character can taste? What can the taste in the character’s mouth tell the audience about the scene?
🎧 Beyond just the voices of other characters, what sounds are in your character’s environment? What does the ambient sound tell us about the location they’re in? What is unique about the soundscape?
💭 Is there an ambient ‘vibe’ or atmosphere to the scene you’re writing beyond a physical sense? What kind of unconscious impression do characters in the scene pick up on and how does it make them feel?
