A Tumblr post saying: I don't fucking care how many times people say 'fiction doesn't affect reality.' Yes it does, I've had first hand experience of how much it does, by playing into the idea that it is ok EVEN FICTIONALLY you are actively helping people become desensitised to and find excuses for abuse. Just say away from me and get some therapy. ALT

Desensitization therapy is a common and a good type of therapy, a lot of brains can overcome fear of things through repeated exposure, as long as you are safe, and it is within your control, which engaging with media, is always completely in your control. I recommend you look into it.

It doesn’t mean you suddenly think it’s OK and good to do, it means that mental health crisis’ are lessened when exposed to a trigger. Desensitization is often difficult and unpleasent at first, but in the long run, you feel much better.

It won’t work for everyone and it won’t work every time, however, it shouldn’t be completely rejected as a type of therapy just because you misunderstand it.

All therapy types will help some people and will hurt others, please don’t make assumptions about others who have different ways of coping than you.
