The Kuril Islands are about 1200 kilometers long, belonging to Russia and partly controversial chain of islands with more than 30 large and small islands of volcanic origin in East Asia. Like a bridge, they connect the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka with the Japanese island of Hokkaidō.
