This IS about fandom as well.
Like. It’s not a coincidence that we’re seeing this massive rise in attitudes in niche fandom spaces that are basically EXACTLY the same as mainstream conservative attitudes with a gay hat.
There is no difference between “you cannot have queer people in this book, it will influence children and make them think it’s okay” and “you cannot ship these two, that’s abusive, it will influence people and make them think that’s okay.”
It is the EXACT SAME SHIT. Don’t think we’ve missed how often fandom beef comes with straight up racist, ableist, sexist, and queerphobic shit being slung at “problematic” creators and shippers. Don’t think we’ve missed how the word “pedophile” is thrown at people over fictional shit- while ALSO being thrown at trans people in the mainstream to justify abuse and laws meant to eradicate us.
This. The attitudes seen in the whole anti-ship movement are EXACTLY the same as conservative book burning attitudes. It’s just being directed at a smaller community on a smaller scale by people without legislative power- but the perpetuation of these attitudes in even these small spaces is EXACTLY why bigoted asshats in government are doing what they’re doing.
It’s enough of a shift in the narrative that they know they can get away with it.
