For tagging as you go vs tagging everything up front: as someone who doesn’t plan, I don’t always know what’s going to show up in a fic. But I do have broad ideas of what will appear, so I try to tag for those. But something that stops me from tagging everything at once, even when I know what elements will show up in future chapters, is that I write smut/kink fic. And I have had too many frustrating moments when I’m reading a WIP smut fic that’s tagged with, idk, spanking. And the spanking doesn’t show up in any of the posted chapters, it’s just coming at some point. And when you’re reading to get off to that one specific kink? That’s frustrating. So I try to balance both elements — readers who want to have an idea of where the story is going and what it will contain, and also the horny readers who are reading my niche kink fic for their niche kinks and will be left unsatisfied if I promise a kink that isn’t there yet.
