‼️ The only person who should have the power to decide if a piece of fiction is harming you emotionally or psychologically is you.
‼️ Any fiction you feel like you are being harmed by you can stop reading/watching/creating it at any time.
‼️ You are always in control when you are consuming or creating fiction.
‼️ Do not surrender the power to decide what fictional ideas might cause you emotional or psychological harm to other people.
‼️ No one will ever know better than you what ideas are harmful to you personally.
‼️ You cannot decide what is psychologically or emotionally harmful to another person.
‼️ Attempting to restrict the kind of fiction that people create or consume because you think it might cause them emotional or psychological harm is authoritarian.
‼️ It is safe to explore any ideas and themes in fiction. Fiction does not and cannot cause physical harm to any person. You are always in control of the fiction you are creating or consuming.
Yeah it is purity culture.
“Mayhaps 75% true”
Wonder what the 25% that isnt true is.
I would in fact like a point-by-point for that 25%. The only thing that I can think is not elaborated on in this post is (and not through fault of the OP) the question of “You are always in control when you are consuming or creating fiction” interacting with things like, what if you have to read this for school? And the answer to that is still VERY much not “ban that book”, the response is “you are still in control of what you are consuming and can stop at any time, and the fact that there are negative consequences if you do not is not the fault of the literature, and I am sorry that this occurred in a system which does not provide you the leeway to not be emotionally or psychologically harmed”. I would also add “corrupted” to the list of things that literature will not do. You will not be “corrupted morally” by reading or writing things. Censorship does not only claim to protect you the reader/writer, but claims to protect other people from you, the reader/writer. If a person is “corrupted” by a piece of fiction, it probably was not the piece of fiction that did it. That’s just the part that you’re able to see.
