Relationships: Pearl Fey/Trucy Wright

Pearl stomped her way into Trucy’s room and flopped down backwards onto her bed. It was the summer vacation of their junior year and Pearl had come to stay for a week at the Wright Anything Agency after the conclusion of the Aquarium mess.

She heaved a deep sigh, staring up at the ceiling.

“Uh oh.” Trucy mused as she hopped up from the pile of magical props she had been rooting through in her hunt for her missing trick handcuffs. Scampering over, she leaned on the bedpost with a tilt of her silk hat-clad head. “I know that sigh, Pearly.”

The kimono-clad girl looked up at her with a wan smile. She shifted and squirmed on the bed restlessly, like a goldfish in a net.

“You caught me, Trucy. Can’t get anything by you.”

“It’s my weird magic eyes.” Trucy made a point of exaggerating her stare for a moment, before she stuck out her tongue. Flopping on the bed next to her, she rolled onto her side to look her way with a smile. “…so what’s up? It’s not the whale thing, is it?”

Pearl rolled over to face her and shook her head vigorously.

“No, it’s not the whale thing,” she said. “I mean not exactly anyway…”

Trucy nodded slowly. “Not exactly, huh?” She stared for a long moment, reading Pearl’s face and the minutia of her body language…out of habit more than anything. Not the whale thing…exactly. Which meant it might have had something to do with the case, or cases?

Pearl shifted again under Trucy’s scrutiny, and covered her face, flushing deeply and kicking her feet.

“You always look at me so serious, stooooop!” she giggled.

It definitely had something to do with the case. Maybe not specifically the whale case?

Trucy giggled with her, before she put her hands over her eyes.

“there. Now my weird eyes aren’t serious.” She stuck her tongue out “it’s about the case, right? Or rather…with cases in general? Am I right? Investigations maybe?”

She kicked her feet again.

“Stoooop!” she giggled. “You’re like a mind reader, it’s super not fair at all.”

It was definitely about investigations. Conducting investigations maybe?

“It’s the Gramarye Miracle, Pearl! I can’t turn it off!” Trucy peeked between her fingers at her. “You wanna be the one in charge of them, right? Or have a bigger role in ‘em more often?”
It was a guess, of course. A bluff like the ones she’d always helped Apollo and daddy with in court.

Pearl rolled over until she was half on top of Trucy. She grabbed her shirt, and shook her gently.

“Not fair, not fair!” she laughed and shook her head. “Alright… you got me…”

Trucy laughed, her arm looping around Pearl as she gave her best stagewoman’s grin, letting herself be shaken before giving her a squeeze. “That’s the power of magic, Miss Pearl! You got a taste of the excitement of a crime scene investigation back during the whale thing and got the itch for it, yeah?”

“Weeeeell,” Pearl pouted, and bit her lip thoughtfully. “You know I’ve sort of been hanging around crime scenes since I was little. But the whole mystery at the aquarium really reminded me.”

“Uh huh…since before I met any of you guys, from what I’ve heard. Since you came to visit daddy when he was a lawyer for the first time…” She thought for a moment before she said “I guess it makes sense that you’d be drawn to it,kinda like me an’ magic…and poor Orla’s trial was a fresh case after like…years away from it, yeah? You’ve been at school, not tagging along with daddy.”

“Yeah,” she nodded. Pearl, flustered, covered her face. “I’ve kind of been thinking about what I might want to do after I’m done with school, you know? Like… for a long time I thought there was an obvious answer…”

Trucy leaned against her with a nod “I’m guessing being a spirit medium, yeah?” she asked curiously, before she reached out to poke Pearl’s nose through her fingers.

“But it sounds like you have a new idea, huh?”

She couldn’t help but think about it herself…’what to do when they were done with school’. For Trucy Wright, the answer always had been ‘magic, magic and more magic’, but she couldn’t deny the excitement of judicial assistance entirely…

Pearl nodded, looking flushed– she seemed both excited and nervous, and maybe even a little guilty. Her hands left Trucy’s shirt, and she twiddled her thumbs nervously as they lay next to one another in the bed.

“I was thinking about maybe… about going and being a—” she bit her lip, and then shook her head, silent.

Trucy smiled at her.

“Aw Pearl, you can tell me! …I promise I’m not gonna judge you or anything!” She tapped her temple “or should I guess?”

Pearl covered her face again, and nodded– she wanted her to guess.

“Well.” Trucy opened her eyes wide, looking her over with a low hmmmmm. “You don’t wanna be a lawyer.” She said definitively “or a prosecutor.”

Pearl nodded– she was correct. Some of her pale hair had fallen out of her careful coif, over her pale, cute face.

Trucy made an exaggerated ‘hmmmmmm’ sound, reaching out to brush Pearl’s hair back over her ear as she nodded her head.

“Not a whale trainer.  Or a ramen vendor.” She was teasing, just a little, as the true answer formed in her mind.

Peal giggled and kicked her feet delicately as she leaned into Trucy’s hand. She shook her head, and her nose bumped Trucy’s fingers.

"Noooo!”

Trucy shifted on the bed letting her silk hat lightly fall to the bed beside her with a tilt of her head, watching Pearl through the strands of her dark hair.

Her fingers bumped against the tip of her nose before she said definitively.

“which leaves just one thing. You wanna investigate directly, yeah? So you wanna be a detective like Ema or Gumshoe.” She leaned in closer, grinning from ear to ear “I’m right, yeah?”

Pearl flushed brighter, and nodded excitedly, her head bobbing up and down, the bottom of her face still covered by her hands.

“Do you think I would be a good one?”

“I think you’d be the best detective I’d ever seen, Pearly.” Trucy giggled as she gently kicked her legs against the bed.

“Just as smart as Ema without the snackoo hailstorm every time you get annoyed, cool as Gumshoe without the pay cuts…..maybe even cool enough to let me and Apollo into a crime scene to look around?” She winked playfully “…but even if not, I think you’d do GREAT.”

Pearl looked delighted. Her hands dropped from her mouth and she pulled Trucy into a hug.

“you really think so? I don’t know if I’d be all that cool, but I really want to try.”

Trucy gave her a tight squeeze, resting her face against her shoulder with a grin.

“I mean…I think you’d be…but the important thing is you’d be doing what made you happy, you know? Investigating crime scenes and finding the truth.”

“You think it’s okay for me to do?” she asked shyly. Trucy knew what was on her mind. Her sister. The Kurain technique and bloodline.

Trucy closed her mind thoughtfully, before she nodded against her shoulder.

“I get it, honestly…inheriting a destiny,” she murmured “Just like you and Miss Maya, a bloodline carries a big weight with it.”

She gave her a squeeze “the Gramarye magic makes me happy, and even if it’s not all I ever wanna do, I wanna perform to bring people joy…and maybe make my dad proud…but if it didn’t make me happy, I wouldn’t.”

She pulled away enough to look at Pearl in the eyes with a smile “…so yeah. I think it’s okay. You don’t have to give up channeling entirely if you don’t wanna , of course, but even if you did it’d still be okay. Because YOU would be happy. Don’t uhm…”

The phrase left her mind, just at the tip of her tongue “…burn…yourself on someone elses fire? No, that’s not right..”

“I think I get it anyway,” she said, putting her feet against Trucy’s. “I donno if you’re right– but I get what you mean.”

Trucy leaned against her with a smile.

“I might be, I might not be you know? But…I think if you wanna be a detective, I’d cheer you on every step of the way! I think Maya would too.”

She lightly rested her forehead against Pearl’s, her feet resting comfortably against Pearl’s and her smile warm and genuine as she could make it.

Pearl leaned in close to her, letting their foreheads touch. She smiled bashfully.

“Thanks, Trucy. Even if I don’t stick with it I think I at least want to try… so your support means a whole lot.”

Trucy flushed, giggling quietly as she gave her another squeeze..

“Good! I’d like to see you try, you know? Plus…you’d look good in the coat. The classic trenchcoat. “ She shifted before she playfully kissed between her eyebrows. “You gotta promise me one thing, though.”

Pearl giggled bashfully at the kiss and batted her eyelashes. “Wear a really cool coat? Or some other promise?”

 Trucy nodded seriously.

“Well. Yeah, obviously you gotta wear the coolest coat– but you also gotta let me borrow your cuffs, gun and badge, at least once.” She grinned brightly. “For a noir themed magic trick.”

Pearl gasped and covered her mouth.

“Trucy, I don’t think that’s allowed!” her little ‘o’ mouth became a big grin. “But for you, I’ll make a little exception. Just for a trick.”

Trucy squeezed her tight with a laugh.

“I KNEW I could count on you. Just for a trick…but if it goes wrong, I’ll count on you to get the decisive evidence for daddy or Apollo to make sure they don’t lock me up on false charges.” She teased.

Pearl giggled and kissed her on the nose.

“You can count on me!”
