The decline of comment culture is something I talk about a lot, however, I didn’t expect a personal rant about the subject to blow up into a 20k+ note post.
However, that same post blowing up has completely validated my theory as to exactly WHY people have stopped leaving comments.
Here’s some of the responses to that post.
On Tumblr, I remember being told about “Tumblr etiquette” where leaving comments or posting in the reblogs is rude and you should only do it in the tags, which imo leaves me to just not want to do it at all. I’m trying to leave this mentality behind because it’s unhelpful most of the time. Yes, bonkers people will try to start fights, but we can block them.
When I joined I actively saw people saying that real tumblr was replying and the comment thing is so recent and they assumed part of the decline. To being back true culture of replies in the body, sending random asks, and having fun.
I’m really glad that I came across that when I first joined… but I still have trouble at times following it because of the fear of getting attacked. That’s just probably my paranoia acting up that I’m trying to fight but really I want to live the tumblr I was told of when I joined so much.
