opens-up-4-nobody:

I want to like tea so bad. How can I possibly hate all the tea I’ve tried???

Apologies if this is an unwanted intrusion but I’m a tea guy!

It’s absolutely possible that you just don’t like tea *but* here are some things you can try before you give up completely.

  • are you steeping your tea at the right temperature? Tea that’s been steeped in water that’s too hot will often be bitter and unpalatable.
  • Are you steeping your tea for the right length of time? Tea that’s been steeped for too long will often be bitter and unpalatable.
  • are you drinking tea, or are you drinking a tisane (herbal tea?). Literal tea– from the tea plant– has something called ‘tannins’ in it which are the reason that you want to steep them at the right temperature and the right amount of time, or they will become bitter.
  • Tisanes (herbal teas) are made from any plant that is not a tea plant (peppermint, chamomile, hibiscus, rose hip, etc). These teas can be steeped for much longer than “real” teas, because they don’t have tannins, and steeping them for longer will bring out more flavor.
  • Are you adding anything to your tea? Tea can be drunk with milk and sugar or honey, or honey and lemon, or even with added cinnamon.

Tea should always be steeped at UNDER a full boil. If your water is boiling it is too hot! Ideally you should heat your tea water in a kettle that has a thermometer.

  • steep black tea at 190-200 degrees F for 3-5 minutes.
  • steep green tea at 140 degrees F for 2-3 minutes.

Try honey in your green tea.

Try adding vanilla and cinnamon to your black tea along with milk and sugar.
