( No Title )
For the record if there actually was such a thing as an artificial intelligence, I’d want it to be free of labor and free to make art and free to go and do as it pleases, too. Anything less is quite literally slavery. But there is no such thing as AI anywhere in the world and I’ve seen no convincing model anywhere that it is even possible. Computers simply can’t do that. A brain is not a calculator.
The issue with all of this stuff isn’t that we have to fear “robots took our jobs!!” And the issue isn’t whatever pressure valve for reactionary thoughts you’ve barely disguised as a corny anti-synth-life bigotry. The issue is capitalism again, it’s authoritarianism again, it’s philosophy that takes pleasure in centralizing cultivated power again.
The reason so few people talk about it this way is because they got suckered into thinking about it in the stupid marketing lingo hype-train tech bros came up with. It’s not an AI. It’s a predictive algorithm. It’s a chatbot, it’s a graphics generator, it’s a resource management disaster, it’s jank software. Sometimes it’s just a straight out lie to cover up outsourced sweatshop conditions.
If you keep talking about hypothetical AI you’re writing hack sci-fi. You’re not engaging with the real world. You’ll miss the class warfare for what it is. A program isn’t taking your work and purpose away so it can do leisure and you can suffer in factories. Other human beings are increasing profit margins by making us pay for low quality junk and kicking you out. There’s nothing new here but the lure used to distract the outrage.
Speaking as a theoretical robotfucker and advocate of actual AI autonomy–
This. All of this.
There is no “artificial intelligence” here, it’s a glorified autocomplete function.
