My absolute favorite kind of mentor and protege relationship is when the mentor absolutely cares about their protege and wants them to succeed

–but they are passing on lessons that are just so, so incredibly toxic and harmful, fully believing them to be the key to success.

“do it for her, that’s how you know you can win.”

“Evidence is everything.”

“The worst of times are when lawyers have to force their biggest smiles.”

In the same vein, there’s “Everything you have, everything you are, you’ve got to give!”

Sworn to the Sword is a goldmine for toxic lessons.

(One day I’ll write a proper essay on Pearl, Connie, knighthood, and personhood, because the way those themes are handled fascinates me to no end.)

1000% all of Sworn to the Sword is this, and I live for it. I wish we’d seen more of Pearl and Connie’s interactions going forward from it.
