Proship is a discourse-related opinion but it also exists without the discourse, it just doesn’t have that label applied. Basically, ship and let ship, even if they are ships with problematic elements is the original version. Lots of people have their own personal definition such as anti-harassment or allowing problematic fiction (given that you know it’s bad) deserves to exist.
It is not a coping mechanism as once again, proship (and using proship as a verb or noun is a bit silly) is an opinion. Yes, there are ideas related to it such as people should be allowed to use fiction to cope or people shouldn’t be shamed for their taste in fiction given they know it’s bad.
I made a post on some reasons for the appeal of age gap ships and shipcest and others can provide their reasons. Someone else also made a word document on the discourse. And for the reasons, common ones I’ve seen and also have are those dynamics (or problematic fiction) is/are interesting such as “how would this relationship go with they were in this [dynamic], “what if” in regards to how a character or characters would react to [x] subject, and much more! Most people outside of proship vs antiship discourse would agree that problematic fiction should exist.
For example, some people (myself included) are interested in serial killers as main characters to see their perspective on the world. Some examples of popular fiction regarding this would be Patrick Bateman, Dexter Morgan, and Norman Bates. There’s also horror which in general has tons of problematic elements.
I Spit On Your Grave has a noncon scene and is a rape revenge story. Despite the fact that murder is morally and legally wrong, it feels powerful to be able to enact justice on those who have wronged “you” (you in the context of being a viewer to a character’s trauma and feeling happy when they get justice).
In general, fiction, problematic or not deserves to exist given it doesn’t hurt anyone with the creation’s production and the creator(s) don’t support bigoted things. People are allowed to be uncomfortable with problematic fiction such as lolicon and shotacon (on a different note, it is a whole legal issue in some places with gray areas) and non-problematic fiction for any number of reasons. Given they don’t harass others for it, their feelings are okay and valid.
An 🐜 was getting huffy over fanart for a game they like, when the game they like in question
And they also had a profile picture of a character from the game, who from the ways people reacted is one of the more problematic characters. The 🐜 then followed up with
“Gore isn’t illegal” and “Gore isn’t a crime” okay, sure.
I went back after making the first part to see if anything was different and they haven’t even played the game!
The 🐜 apparently also makes suicide jokes. Trigger Warning
Hello! I was inspired by an ask to @/just-antithings to open my ask box for people to send me their favorite “problematic” ships!
It can be an actual ship in your fandom, or just tropes you like! Selfship & OC ships welcome too!
Just tell me a little bit about the characters, what makes the ship problematic, & why you like it, & I’ll respond with my thoughts on the tropes/dynamic! (All positivity because I just love hearing about problematic/toxic/dark dynamics & if I’m in the fandom I might steal your ships! <3)
Everyone is welcome! Ships of all kinds are welcome! My anons are on if you’re shy ♡
I will link to the original ask & an ask I got from a friend as an example in a rb (because this won’t show up in the tags if it has links)
I’ll be organizing all of these asks under “#problematic ships /pos” if anyone wants to look through them after I get a few!
It is perfectly acceptable to interact with the fandom of your kintype as long as you:
a) Don’t rub your kintype in the creator’s face, no matter how small or large their audience is.
b) Don’t attempt to tell other fans what they can and can’t do in fandom regarding your kintype or source. It does not belong to you.
Fandom belongs to everyone. Its okay to be fictionkin and still be in fandom, just don’t be a jerk or act with entitlement with regard to your kintype and source.
The same goes for soulbonds, fictives and fictional introjects as well.
Tbh it’s actually really funny that the question of whether it’s Wrong or even Abusive to engage in make-believe scenarios with consenting adults is even taken seriously as a topic of debate. Like I really can’t emphasize enough that the reason, for example, child sexual abuse is bad is because a child is being harmed. If a child isn’t being harmed it isn’t child abuse. Even having to say this is ridiculous. You finding something gross/weird/whatever doesn’t make it abuse.
“But those people obviously want to do those things to a child” in what world is having consensual sex with an adult evidence of wanting to sexually abuse a child? Think for a moment. Do you think the person who roleplays a sexy cop scenario with their partner actually wants to get arrested? Pleeaasse
