After a youth of dark deeds serving Those Who Slither in the Dark, Epheros began to question his loyalty and morals after a certain assignment. Sent to follow, murder, and replace the young son of a noble house he found himself falling in love with the young man even as he watched him pursue his own secret romance with a peasant girl. Breaking down and unable to complete his mission, Epheros revealed himself to the young lord. He bid him to take his girl and run with her as far as the two of them could go while Epheros would remain and take his place, allowing the lord to go only after stealing a single kiss.
Thereafter, Epheros took on the identity of Ebeneezer Von Essar attending Garreg Mach in his place and joining the Black Eagles class as planned by Those Who Slither, however now with no intention of carrying out their dark plans.

More than a century before the Insurrection of the Seven, Epheros was born as one of Those Who Slither in the Darkness, and grew up ensconced in their manipulation and hateful scheming worldview. Raised and trained to be an assassin of the forgotten Agarthan Empire the young shapeshifter never questioned what he had been taught as world’s order and often took wicked delight in his murderous assignments, keeping his distance from “pathetic” humanity.
However, events would come to pass that would reveal a softer side of the young assassin. Sent to follow, murder, and replace the young son of noble house Essar he found himself falling in love with the young man even as he watched von Essar pursue his own secret romance with a peasant girl. Breaking down and unable to complete his mission, Epheros revealed himself to the young lord. He bid him to take his girl and run with her as far as the two of them could go while Epheros would remain and take his place, allowing the lord to go only after stealing a single kiss.

After Ebeneezer Von Essar eloped with his beloved, Epheros took on his identity and place in the royal house. Now mingling with humans, the young Agarthan found himself growing fond of them, and even attached, and less willing to be used as a tool for those who hated and sought to rule or destroy them. He also found himself enjoying the luxury he was allowed to experience as the son of a noble house; the deliberate austerity of his Agarthan youth had made even some of the simple pleasures accessible to human commoners a novelty..
While he had intended only to spare his beloved Von Essar a deadly fate, Epheros found himself questioning the plans and intentions of the Agarthans. Compassion and self-interest eventually wore away at his loyalty enough that he privately forsook the mission and ideals of Those Who Slither, hoping to find some way to stall their plans instead.
