If villains are bad, why are they the ones usually fighting to change a broken system why the ‘heroes’ are fighting to maintain the status quo? 🤔
Im going to completely ignore that this is a villain self ship post and actually talk about the answer. You talked about my hyperfixation so you get the consequences
Heroes often emulate what a society deems as morally and politically correct. While villains emulate the opposite. Writers often subverted this general trope with characters who did heroic things with unheroic actions or motives, this is called an anti hero (we all know this). But as culture evolves we can see characters in different lights across the hero-anti hero-villain spectrum.
One of the earliest anti heroes (in the context of culture) is Odysseus. And he’s an anti hero because ancient greece viewed heroism as winning one’s battles with brute strength. But Odysseus won with cunning strategy. But in today’s cultural eye we often see him as the “smart guy”, a staple in hero teams across various pieces of media. In a group of heroes there’s generally gonna be one member who’s job it is to think of strategies and plans to solve problems
So in a society and culture that values upholding the status quo, a hero would do just that. And a villain would be the one trying to change (old school comic book heroes for example). But if your culture and society values change and protecting minorities then the villains would often be the ones upholding a rigid, bigoted status quo and the heroes would be fighting back (percy jackson for example)
You are 10000% right and this is something I think about a lot. I just wanted to make a pithy f/o post about it 🤣
Sincerely appreciate the excellent analysis since it’s something I’ve struggled to put into words in the past.
