…This came up for discussion the other day. @petermorwood and I are in general agreement that there’s not as much mongering going on as there used to be. (Though the war- variety is still too prevalent…)

…For those curious: the OED says that the mong- root comes from an Old English / Old Norse word mangian and its noun form mangere, meaning “agent”. “A dealer, trafficker, trader,” the OED says. “From the 16th century onward, primarily, one who carries on a petty or disreputable ‘traffic.’”

Everybody’s out here forgetting about war mongering.
