Playing Grand Theft Auto V in 2023 is surreal.
The game came out in 2013, and the content of the talk radio was intended as an over-the-top, wacky, satirical take on actual social and political positions.
And I turn it on in game now and it just sounds like I turned on the regular news, or radio.
I just had to listen to a character written in 2013 go on an anti-vax rant about how the polio vaccine caused his children to be disabled. (The joke being that you hear his wife saying his children are disabled because he drinks and drives).
I could go on and on about other examples
GTA wasn’t trying to predict the future, but it did accidentally, just by extrapolating the present to its most logically ridiculous and over the top version of itself.
