hot take: forcing people to harass others lest they be dubbed problematic and shunned is ableist as fuck. i’m sure there are other ways, but my own primary issue is lack of energy. even if i agreed with antis i wouldn’t be accepted because i’m not able to summon the energy to do something as taxing as harassing someone and hunting through their posts for more problematic shit. i have things i gotta do. not wasting spoons on that. as i said i’m sure there are other ways it’s ableist, and i’m curious for your input, if you have anything to add?
sorry, same anon that sent the ask about ableism— to clarify there’s obviously a ton of ableism that antis do, i was referring specifically to the harassment and the encouragement to harass. things like “autistic people shouldn’t have sex” and “if your partner is less than x feet tall you’re a creep” or what have you are of course also very ableist and awful takes
You’re absolutely right to say that an element of fancops ableism is apparent in the mandate to harass and threaten proshippers.
Antishipping is inherently performative, and inherently normative and ableist/eugenicist. Those who can’t keep up with the group are easily discarded.
Additionally, with regard specifically to antis encouragement to harass; please consider this passage from the Wikipedia article on the “two minutes hate” from 1984.
In the 1949 dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four the Two Minutes Hate is the daily, public period during which members of the Outer Party of Oceania must watch a film depicting the enemies of the state (…)
The political purpose of the Two Minutes Hate is to allow the citizens of Oceania to vent their existential anguish and personal hatreds towards politically expedient enemies (…) In re-directing the members’ subconscious feelings away from the Party’s government of Oceania, and towards non-existent external enemies, the Party minimises thoughtcrime and the consequent, subversive behaviours of thoughtcriminals.
