I need some writing advice, is it okay for a drabble to go a couple of words over? I know they’re usually exactly 100 words but sometimes when trying to trim them they just don’t look right.
Drabble in a technical sense only refers to fiction that is exactly 100 words long. Likewise a double drabble is exactly 200 words long.
However, ‘drabble’ has often been used colloquially to refer to any very, very short piece of fanfiction.
If you, like we, prefer precise terminology, and don’t want to cut your work down to exactly 100 words, some other common terms to refer to fics that short are “flash fic” and “ficlet”.
Toko (😼🔪) finds part of the joy of writing drabbles is the precision of making sure it’s exactly 100 words. But he also loves writing sonnets and iambic pentameter and other rigid formats.
Anyway it’s fine if you want to call it a drabble too. It’s your fic.
