Waitwaitwait… Characters gaining a life of thier own is NOT normal? I was told “everyone gets that at least occasionally, you’re making too big a deal out of this” the last time I brought it up with somebody
It’s an atypical experience.
Most writers and RPers will look at you like you have two heads if you say your characters really have thoughts and agency of their own.
Most writers are making things up and making conscious decisions about their writing and characters at all times.
There are authors, professional authors, who experience the kind of characters we’re discussing, but it is not the norm.
If you have a character that genuinely seems to have agency and existence of their own, you are having an atypical experience.
The specifics of what this experience means to you are yours to figure out and decide on, but experiences like these are often considered to have something in common with some forms of plurality, soulbonding or fiction based alterhuman experience.
