“Write what you know” does not mean you should write only about things you’ve directly experienced.

👉 It does not mean you shouldn’t write about characters from other cultures.

👉 It does not mean you shouldn’t write about characters with sexualities other than your own.

👉 It does not mean you shouldn’t write about characters with struggles that you don’t experience.

👉 It means write from your heart. Write about things that make sense to you. Write themes you know to be true to your experience of the world.

Do your research when writing about things you haven’t experienced. Write with curiosity and an open heart.

Don’t limit yourself because someone else thinks you should only write “what you know.”
