I wouldnt say its tragic, none of the main characters have died for certain except one person in Dazai’s backstory.
It does contain some fairly dark subject matters, for example the character of Dazai is constantly romanticizing suicide and trying (and failing) to go through with it, another main-ish character has a backstory where they were a government experiment as a kid, and another main character was horribly abused as a kid by their guardian. Most of the characters in fact have tragic backstories, and therefore lots of them do display signs of mental illness.
The main story however isnt tragic, it focuses more on action and mystery.
Its not finished yet, both the manga and the anime are still ongoing, and a couple of the main characters are possibly dead but no one in the fandom knows cause they might be not actually dead and are able to be brought back. Everyone is a bit unsure right now, debating and theorising whether the characters are actually dead or not. Also a couple of them are maybe going to die, in the current chapters theyre kind of having a stand off and trying to kill each other, but its debatable whether they will actually succeed. I personally think neither of them will die, but i could be proven wrong.
So i cant guarantee that no main character dies unfortunately, and i would definitely look up trigger warnings for it since it does contain some dark stuff, but it is really good.
