So here’s an interesting fandom story.

Back in the day before social media took over everything, when people made seperate websites for things, there were lots of little, fandom specific fanfiction archives.

Anyone could, and did create an archive and solicit fanfiction for it; sometimes there was a way for users to automatically submit fic, but more often it had to be hand submitted to the owner of the archive, who would put it up.

There were niche archives for all kinds of things, and some archives were based on things that the creators of the archive wanted to avoid.

For instance, in the early 2000s there was a lot of drama when a group of fans created an archive for fanfic of a certain popular wizard fandom.

This archive they created had a strict “no slash” policy, because the owners of the archive thought that gay fanfiction was disgusting.
