Everyone talks about how Sex Ed in American highschools is fucked because they fail to inform kids of important information they need to know in life. Right down to where they opt to just use the “Choose abstinence or you’re heathen whore.” Which yes, keep talking about it please. But we need to talk more about how when discussing STDs/STIs that they teach about them in such a bleak, hopeless, and down right fear mongering way. It’s not the 1980s anymore where just having any STD makes it game over for you. “Cut all your losses, you’re fucked, you’re gonna suffer the rest of your life. Or die. Which ever comes first.” If highschool me knew how far treatments have become, I wouldn’t be having panic attacks as an adult thinking that if I did contract anything then my life is over. “Who’s gonna love me now that I’m disgusting?” That’s what it did to me. And I went to school in the 2010s ffs.
You’re absolutely right, anon.
We can’t speak for anyone else, but we had a Catholic education, and all our “sex ed” was was fearmongering, and a video of a woman giving birth.
What’s that meme? Something about having sex before marriage? “Well I guess you’ll have to be ready to die?”
Yes, ours was like that.
The fearmongering and shaming that goes on in regard to STDs is terrible, bigoted, and regressive.
