If you’re a writer who has trouble with focus, and you find that your attention wanders– for instance if you find yourself frequently checking social media– here’s one technique that might help.
Solo Word Sprints
Word Sprints are a writing game, generally done with a group of writers, where one competes to write the most words in a set amount of time.
They’re often really good for engaging the focus of writers through competitive spirit.
You can do them solo.
⏱️ Choose an amount of time– between 5 and 15 minutes is probably ideal but you know what works best for you.
⏱️ Set a timer.
⏱️ Work on your writing and get as many words written as you possibly can during that time.
⏱️ When time’s up, write down your time and word count somewhere to keep it. If you want you can share it on Tumblr #solowordsprints
⏱️ Take a moment to be distracted. Let yourself check social media for a few minutes, make a cup of tea, etc.
⏱️ Come back and set your timer again.
⏱️ Try to break your own record for words written during this time.
⏱️ Write down your word count.
⏱️ Take a moment to be distracted.
⏱️ Repeat as needed.
