People always forget that Wendy, not Peter Pan, is the protagonist of the story.
Following that same logic, the prince would be the protagonist in The Little Mermaid and that’s not true. He’s one of the main characters, yes. But not “the” protagonist as if he were the main character. The main character in The Little Mermaid is the little mermaid, the same way the main character in Peter Pan is Peter Pan.

Wendy is the main character in Peter Pan because she is the one the story is about. Her actions drive the main plot, and she’s the one who has goals and a character arc and changes as the story progresses.
I don’t see how you say this is like calling the prince the main character of the Little Mermaid at all.
Please note I’m speaking of the actual Peter Pan story here, not the disney movie called Peter Pan.
Do not confuse protagonists with titular characters. Often tales will even be named after the antagonist. The protagonist is the character from whose perspective you are experiencing the story. The Wizard of Oz is the titular character of The Wizard of Oz but the protagonist is still Dorothy. These are stories with wonderful little girls at the centre of them
