This might just be me, but I have mild grievances with what the term ‘creepypasta’ has become because it’s pretty much overwritten the short paragraph or two horror stories not connected to some larger mythos of characters or entities/forces. The current stuff that have become more akin to folklore style stories feel so vastly different, and it makes it difficult to even find things similar to the old image board stories. I appreciate both, but I really wish there was some better way to distinguish them apart because when I want to read a creepypasta, I don’t want more verbose stories about recurring characters, but something short and quick to chill me. Like… I’m not mad or anything about these changes because language shifts and changes over time, and words take on new meanings sometimes, but it’s something frustrating because it makes finding what I’m looking for more difficult. I just wish there was better established and widely accepted language about the subgenres to differentiate them.
I absolutely agree with you and I wish there was a better way to taxonomize and differentiate the two for searching purposes.
Terminology is hard!
