Nah. This discourse will always be around because 1. some people can’t stand that their ship is ever written “wrong” and 2. lots of people don’t agree about what a top!so-and-so tag even means.

If I intend to write with fixed top/bottom dynamics, I can at least tag top!X because I know who the top is supposed to be. Someone may still disagree that how I write X goes with them being the top, especially if no sex acts that make it clear happen on-page, but too bad for them.

If I don’t think in terms of this, it’s quite likely others will still see traces of roles in my fic, but I may have no idea whom to tag as the top.

If I intentionally try to write so that nobody is the top, I may find it actively offensive to tag this way.

People don’t need to be dicks about others’ preferences, but the natural variation in tastes means that no one tagging standard will ever work for everything.

Personally, as a reader, I’ll look for BTS fic with top and bottom tags when I’m looking for a particular flavor of fic, and I will avoid those tags regardless of who is in which role when I want another flavor of fic.

Hilariously, I have a Korean friend who fell out of reading BL as a young person because she disliked strict top/bottom dynamics. People are all over the place on this as on anything.
