Why is this such a popular take. “I was for this post until I realized it was about AO3″ sounds like you just like censorship and controlling strangers. You want to censor personal expression but you’re against corporate censorship? Kay.
In some ways, as much as they’d deny it, a lot of this feels like the lingering.. Published Fiction is Art and fanfic is Not attitude.
It’s probably not entirely deliberate, to be honest, and I doubt most of them are consciously thinking it, but the constant accusations of all the Bad Fanfic authors being straight women daring to write things they get off to certainly doesn’t help.
I think it’s that, and it’s lingering “women and queers need to have their interests regulated for purity” that American society really really pushes down our throat.
it’s actually about bullying. they can feel big, feel heard, when they target and gang-up on a fanfic writer who’s writing a may/december romance. what would their tweets do to someone like the russo brothers, or woody allen? they don’t care about educating or making a difference, they just want to throw their weight around and hurt someone.
And as someone who came of age in the edgelord generation, I see a LOT of commonalities between antis’ behaviour and that of the people who bullied the writers of Mary Sue fanfiction.
How dare woman enjoy herself in a way I don’t Approve of. She’s like….23…OLD! She should be child rearing and celibate.
