Homestuck is a portal fantasy story (or “isekai”) like Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz.

It’s about a group of children who are metaphysically predestined to play a video game that takes them to a game-like space in order to facilitate the cycle of the creation of universes.

The story is a deconstruction of the hero’s journey in fiction, as well as a meta-textual self-reflection on it’s own existence as a compromise between the creator and the reader.

Its humor is largely based on referencing other fictional works, and memes, and the bulk of its plot is based on taking something you thought was a throwaway joke and making it into an important and serious plot point down the road.

Time travel is the central mechanic that makes the plot work (or not work, depending.)

The first five acts of the story which comprise the first half of the work are fantastic, act six, which comprises the second half of the work is not– largely due to creator breakdown.

The story introduces loads of characters, all of whom are important, all of whom have multiple versions of themselves, almost none of whom get even a fraction of the screen time they deserve.
