▪ It’s okay to write fiction about characters with backgrounds you don’t share, and who are part of marginalized groups that you are not a part of.

▪ Only writing fiction about characters of your own background and from groups you are a part of is narrow-minded and limiting.

▪ Do your research and be respectful when writing characters with backgrounds you don’t share and who are part of marginalized groups that you are not a part of.

▪ “Being respectful” does not mean creating only clean, wholesome, sanitized depictions of characters with happy endings.

▪ It’s okay to write messy, tragic, complicated depictions of characters with backgrounds you don’t share and who are part of marginalized groups you are not a part of.

▪ Writing fiction about characters outside of your experience when you want to do so  is part of creating diverse fiction and a welcoming writing community for people from those groups.

▪ Do not be intimidated by bigots who believe that people of other backgrounds and groups are so inherently different from you that it is impossible to relate them to or write fiction about their experiences.
