Maybe because they think fiction affects reality so much that if they make something up it will be real.
I wish I could be *certain* you’re not right.
Most likely I think they assume it’s a common and believable narrative. They believe it doesn’t have to be something they’ve personally experienced in order for it to be true.
They, to put a fine point on it, take it on faith.
