Hello I’m the ‘this ship makes no sense’ anon It’s a trend I’ve noticed recently! Definitely always been around (back in the day there were entire forums dedicated to canon compliance ONLY shipping) but now it just seems so much more wide-spread especially among antis who are also sometimes going after rarepairs and crack ships. It’s just used pejoratively and holier than thou as if someone is superior for having a ship that ties into the narrative because…media literacy?? Idk people just get so upset when they see people make things that aren’t canon. Imo that just seems like a serious lack of imagination especially if they act superior about their own ships that ‘make sense’ to canon.
There’s a reason it’s more widespread now.
It’s the same reason that calling ships “problematic” and morality policing is more widespread now.
People want a reason to feel justified in telling other people not to ship a pairing that they don’t like.
People used to call these pairings “cringe” “lame” “stupid” etc, but the push-back against cringe culture and the push-back against harassing people for harmless weirdness has backfired.
The push-back against cringe culture has not resulted in less harassment.
It has resulted in the people who want to harass others changing their language and making up reasons why the things they don’t like are morally wrong.
