About giving criticism to authors when it’s about a sensitive subject: I read a fic once where the author wrote in the AN that they hoped that they had done a good job with their writing. It was a short fic about religion, specifically about a Buddhist character and another one you could describe as Shinto adjacent. To make a long essay short: the fic was garbage in treating those subjects well. The author basically turned these two characters into Christian atheists who only “believed in the things they could see” but kept religion around as a sort of spiritual guide or whatever. People can write whatever they want and I don’t have to like but in this case I nearly wrote a critique about the fic because the author sounded like they wanted to write a good take on these characters’ religious thoughts but they just spectacularly failed at that because they couldn’t see past their own (non)religious upbringing and Christian cultural background. In the end I didn’t because I lacked the time but in the future I think I’ll try to point out how authors didn’t manage to look past their own biases when they made it clear in their notes that that was their goal with their writing.
