From someone who is writing a self-indulgent self-insert fanfiction, do people who self-insert generally like reading stories of other people’s self-insert OCs? I do, but I’m curious about how common it is.
I don’t know if we’re a good person to ask– when we were heavily involved with reading fanfiction, back in the 2000-2010 era, it was extremely common for people to write canon x OC fic and post it the expectation that people would actually read them.
This was before “x reader” fiction came into prominence, so for the most part, OC fic filled this void.
We read (and wrote) a LOT of of OC x canon fics.
There were always people who didn’t read them, but at the time, OC x canon fics got almost as much attention as canon x canon fics.
If that’s not the case these days my guess is that it is in response to the rise of “x reader” “y/n” fics which give the reader the desired experience without the layer of separating.
I’m curious what the experience and opinion of others is– please chime in!
