what is a proship
Proship means “ship and let ship”; (pro meaning in favor of, ship meaning enjoying a fictional pairing in media).
It is the opposite stance of “antiship”, which is a stance that is in favor of policing what other people ship.
Am I proship? I mean, I don’t care who ships who, and if I see a ship that’s really weird (such as child x older character), I’ll be grossed out but ultimately just leave that there?
That would be considered proship, yes! Proship doesn’t mean you’re interested in taboo/problematic ships yourself, it just means you don’t care what other people are doing with regards to fiction.
The major issue with the antiship community is that they go out of their way to harass people over ships they don’t like, instead of just scrolling away, blocking, etc.
I have seen people call proshippers pedophiles, and Im scared Ill be identified as such. stuff like that really irks me. And Im worried Ill be forever chastized for it
This is unfortunately not an unrealistic fear. However, thankfully antis are just a (very) vocal minority in fandom and they’re pretty easy to avoid if you keep anon asks off (or delete nasty ones) and block blogs that go around harassing people.
I should note too that calling yourself antiship or neutral does not protect you from being harassed by antis over pairings anyway– one thing I see a lot of is more extreme antis harassing less extreme antis over pairings and calling them “disgusting proships” etc.
I have seen people who call themselves antis harassed by other antis for things like ships with a 2 year age gap, shipping a pairing the anti considers to be toxic or abusive in some way, etc.
