In regards to antis and gender bias, I remember my partner and I both sort of sticking in it for the other’s sake. I also remember when they finally turned on him. He was a man right up until he did a middle eastern version of a character who was white in generally accepted fanon (character is aracial in source.) He is middle eastern, I’d like to clarify. People assumed for some reason the version was of an african american version, and since the character is canonically a shit dad, immediately accused him of racism. The moment he was no longer their perfect artist, they started sending rape threats and misgendering both me and him. Suddenly we were lesbians they hoped would get beat, and not trans men in an mlm relationship. Some of those messages specifically called us dykes, or (I suppose because I use neopronouns and he’s more obviously binary) I was the dyke and would get asks about people raping ME in front of him. Our genders being recognized seemed entirely conditional on us not stepping out of line, perceived or otherwise. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back for both of us. Obviously staying in the movement for mutual safety ultimately failed, and neither of us really agreed with any of the tenants regardless. He’s mostly gone dormant on his art account, and I straight up deleted and remade to get away from it all. I still don’t post a ton of art on Tumblr and have leftover trauma from the whole event. I’m terrified of making characters who aren’t of things I’m either incredibly well studied on or literally me (slavic and white) or else I fear I’ll get that same barrage of hate. In recent years, antis have also had a lot of overlap with the gender essentialists and TERFs who misgender me or my self inserts in fanfic. So there’s that.
