Anti-Fan Archive I really can’t stand the “anti/purity discourse is a dog-whistle racists use” statements happening because they repeatedly ignore the fact that 95% of the Pro/Anti shipping discourse revolves around depictions of sexual topics in fiction.
And beyond that, it ignores the racism that has been happening specifically because of that discourse and how much of it revolves around people excusing themselves of accountability for their racist and xenophobic statements because they feel their media consumption is purer
You can have example after example, mountain after mountain of not only racist statements, but homophobic, transphobic and abusive, violent statements against minority groups because of fiction, and people just pretend it’s not happening AT ALL
You can talk about the concern over minors infiltrating spaces they literally think are full of predators. Talk about the hundreds of posts people make stating that they believe a ship a minor likes can alone reveal if they were groomed and sexually abused
You can point out the concerned young adults treat shipping like substance abuse; afraid of “relapsing” into ships they deem “toxic”, and how people fear being excommunicated from social groups for liking an anime character they should have “grown out of liking” after turning 18
You can point out how multiple people who framed themselves as safe adults because of their ships admitted to either grooming minors or sexually assaulting people. You can point out the thousands of statements of anti-shippers saying survivors deserved their abuse and should die
Or that they’re “bad” survivors who just couldn’t cope “normally.” All of these arguments revolve around people assuming an entire swath of fans (whether they ID as pro-ship or not) should not be around children or animals or their siblings/family because they literally think that these people are legitimately dangerous JUST because of the fiction and ships they like.
And these arguments never hinge on actual science. No one is sharing books or papers discussing how the human psyche actually works, and how different people process fiction. NOPE
The CORE problem happening here is that people are excusing horrible behavior because they think that what people like in fiction means they’re real-life abusers and thus revoke their humanity. They unironically, 10000% believe this. And this abuse of course affects those most easily accessible and vulnerable, which ultimately leads to a ton of trashing, in-fighting and punching downwards constantly.
The (actual) big influential cishet mass media guys don’t get hit with that. It’s the BIPOC/Queer people making niche content who become the punching bags.
But none of this factors into the conversation.
At all
That’s the real problem here.
There’s racism in the real world and racism in fandom; but the fact that people deliberately ignore all of the very blatant core anti-sex and anti-science fandom wank that led to these extreme instances of racist, homophobic, transphobic, and abusive incidents in the first place is the most frustrating part.
Ignoring all the conservative dog whistles that are actually in fandom now like anti-sex/anti-porn/bdsm, “porn addiction” fears from radfems and religious organizations
