homunculus-argument:

If there’s one thing that’s hilarious when it’s done with skill but really easy to fuck up, it’s when kids’ media has some adult jokes thrown in that are executed in such a subtle way that it flies right over kids’ heads that you only even realise in hindsight like 20 years later like “hold on, damn, they really threw that in there, huh.”

You could put a gun to my head and tell me to name it but I absolutely could not recall the film or show I saw it on, I probably did not even see the whole thing from the start to the end, but there was some not-disney-but-definitely-same-kind-of-art-style animation, a scene where a prince is woken up by some uptight nitpicky scholar or tutor or some such who starts lecturing him about royal duty. The prince’s dog starts moving under his blanket and this guy grimaces in disgust before gingerly pulling the covers and breaks into a quick soft smile before going back to nagging the prince about responsibilities as a future king or something.

And as a kid you’re there like “ah yes, this uptight nitpick bookkeeper thinks it’s gross that the prince lets his dog sleep in his bed, but the doggy is too cute for him to be mad about it :)” and that’s perfectly logical. And then it hits you unexpectedly decades later that hold on. The prince is literally royalty, a guy his late teens or early 20s. This dude was not expecting to find a dog.
