In Defense of Short Fics

Readers need to stop being so dismissive of short fics. Not every plot calls for 50K+ words.

Or 25K.

Or 5K.

Or even 1K.

Short fics can give you the emotional punch in the gut you’re looking for when you don’t have the time or aren’t in the mood for something longer.

Hell, I’ve written a complete and emotionally devastating fic that only has 45 words (including the title).

Yes, sometimes you want a fic that’s the equivalent of a 5 course meal.

But sometimes, all you want is a Hershey’s Kiss.

Yes!!!! This so much!

I write short works (Microfics, drabbles), because right now I don’t have the time and energy to write longer works. I only write longer stuff, when I’m really digging an idea/prompts.

And also short works are a lot of fun to write:) Not to forget, they can sometimes be hard to nail down. Especially, when you aim for exactly 100 words XD

Also, I resonate so hard with your first line, OP. I can see that, for the majority, my drabbles/microfics get the least kudos. My writing friend tells me that, when people see such a short word count, they dismiss it, because in their eyes, it’s a sign of a beginner writer or a really lazy writer; what I personally find, sorry for my language, bullshit.

On the other side, I think that people were burned too many times by placeholders/‘this is only a rough summary’/’i’ll write it later’ works that also have a low word count.
