the first rule of detective fiction is that the detective in question should ALWAYS just be the nosiest person alive and never be a cop
I will also accept “protagonist has detectivedom thrust upon ‘em”.
With that said, my interest in forcing random members of the public to investigate grisly crimes is strictly fictional and I do not consider it to be praxis.
