https://www.tumblr.com/olderthannetfic/718924158401134592/i-have-seen-some-analyses-and-analyses-of-fandomThis assumes that people only defend what they like, but they don’t. I have never really been into underage or incest ships. And while I do enjoy some non/dub-con stuff, even there I’m more into stories with some sort of redemption arc. Hydra-trash-party-monster-turns-into-an-actually-good-dom kind of stuff. I’ve never gotten disgusted comments on my very niche and not popular fic. Maybe the occasional person blocked me for the ship name in my profile. But I don’t think people should be called pedos no matter what fictional content they read or write. Having been a teenager in the HP fandom, I’ve seen every problematic ship possible, including Snape/everyone and outrageous magical creature pairings. Even to teenage me it was clear that it was not that deep. Many of those people were just having fun and trying to one up each other on the crazy shit they came up with. And none of that was even stuff I wanted to read! That people these days are told to kill themselves over stuff like this blows my mind. As someone who was (midly) bullied in school and has had suicidal thoughts since as long as can remember, I just can’t stand this. That is stuff that can actually affect children, for fuck’s sake. Because that’s real people telling real you that you should die.Fanfic always comes with the context of “not real” — not just in our world but even in the canon universe! It’s two layers of “not real” right there. And children are not stupid. They know what make believe is. (And even if they don’t–then that is the problem, not the fiction they read.) But far too many kids still grow up learning that they are inherently bad, unlovable, a burden for their parents, etc. Those kids can find refuge in fandom–or at least they could until recently.
