Look, I’m going to be honest, I don’t care whether people feeding other fans’ fanfiction into AI is “legal” or “illegal”.
What it is, is rude, entitled, and disrespectful of your fellow fans.
From what I’ve seen (and experienced shouted at me), the pro-AI folks just pivot to talking about legality and copyright as soon as you say the word “steal.” Which is why I’m glad someone took apart their shitty argument. But otherwise, yeah, obviously legality is kinda irrelevant to most of us.
I recently read an opinion that ai bros are so into machine generated art despite the results being mediocre at best, because that want to claim to ‘own’ a piece of art, and it’s the perceived ownership that matters rather than the quality.
So yeah I think you’re right and that’s why people bring the legal factor into it.
Oh that’s definitely a factor, there are people legit guarding their prompt sequences (“make your own! I spent hours on this!”). My introduction to the whole ai thing was that guy who trained an image generator on the art of a very recently deceased artist and added “credit plz” to his post. 🤦
