Dear non-cane users please try and learn these DOS AND DONTs because they are basic respect and necessary for our lives:

Ask if I need help picking something up: ✅

Be patient with my walking speed ✅

If we are together, walk at the same pace as me even if its slower: ✅

If my cane is in the way of something politely ask me to adjust its location: ✅

If my cane drops pick it up and directly hand it to me: ✅

(Medical professionals) ask if I need a non-metal walker or wheelchair if my cane is unsafe in a specific medical area (such as MRI): ✅

DON’T BE OFFENDED WHEN I SAY NO (to ANY of these): ✅

Compliment my cane: ✅

Ask where I bought my cane: ✅

Move my cane away from me: 🚫

Touch my cane without permissions: 🚫

Use my cane as a toy in any way, even if I am not using it: 🚫

Ask me why I use my cane (unless imperative to your job): 🚫

Expect me to walk without my cane for any distance: 🚫

Tell me you’re sorry I have to use a cane: 🚫

Encourage me not to use my cane: 🚫

Tell me you’ll pray for me because you see I use a cane: 🚫

Wheelchair Version

One I had to deal with recently:

  • Don’t expect me to cross a busy street in order to get into the car. I’m slow, it’s not safe, and I could get seriously hurt. Pull around to the same side of the street.
