see the thing that annoys me a lot about so many self-professed dark fiction enjoyers is the like the. implicit belief that because a romance is predatory or meant to be read as horrifying means that all the tender or caring moments are just for manipulation or some shit. like ok fair im one of those annoying “everything is about love” bitches but just because the love is horror doesn’t mean like. the people involved aren’t capable of genuine tenderness towards each other lol
pardon the comparison but it feels like the same vein as “if they really love you they shouldn’t have abused you” like in theory they shouldn’t but alas the reality is that a lot of abusers are genuinely driven by what they think is love. and quite a lot of survivors still love their abusers. just because there was abuse doesn’t make the love less real etc etc
going back to this, this is also what kinda bothers me about some people with fucked up ships going “lol i don’t ship them because i think they’re sweet” like…… the horror doesn’t make the love any less sweet. sometimes the sweetness comes from the horror actually. when i ship a fucked up ship it’s because i think there is sweetness in the way they’re fucked up.
