This is not a healthy way to think about fictional characters

[A screenshot of a post reading, “sometimes i hate that my favorite fictional couples are also other peoples favorites, i hate that those people draw them being sexually intimate with each other when the couple doesn’t even need that kind of intimacy, i hate that allosexuals are constantly sexualizing them. their bonding isn’t going to be stronger just because they have sex

i want to gatekeep my favorite ships forever at this point”]

Repeat: That is not a healthy way to think about fictional characters

I wasn’t going to say anything because I don’t want to get involved in arguments I don’t care about on the internet… but it is kind of frustrating to see people misinterpreting the screenshotted comment in like the worst possible way… Like it is pretty obvious that it is just someone expressing a frustration about how difficult it is to engage in fandom when most people engage in fandom in a different way… They aren’t actually saying that they don’t want anyone else to like the characters, it’s just that when shipping is taken as an inherent or inevitable aspect of fandom, it can be hard to find people who don’t do that as part of their fandom…

The op literally said ‘I hate that my favorite fictional couples are also other people’s favorites’ and goes on to detail how they hate the way other fans engage in fandom and that they want to gatekeep.

There’s no misinterpretation because there’s no interpretation – I’m not divining what OP ‘really means’ – those are the words that they said.
