Dysautonomia is so wild.

You’ll just be vibing and chilling, and your nervous system will go, “Hey, can’t help but notice you ate a little more food than usual; we’re gonna have to shut everything else down and direct all the blood in your body to your stomach,” and suddenly you’re lying on the floor with your legs elevated and a heart rate of 140 because your body doesn’t body so good.

If you’ve got some kind of dysautonomia or suspect you do, larger, heavier meals can be a culprit of dysautonomia symptoms.

It’s why sometimes doctors will tell patients to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day rather than three larger meals because the body diverts extra blood to the digestive system about 20-40 minutes after you eat. For most people, that’s totally fine. They might just get a bit sleepy after a heavy meal, which is totally normal.

But if you’re part of the “nervous system doesn’t work good” club, it can cause Symptoms. So if you’ve just finished eating, say, a large turkey meal, there’s a possibility that’s why.

(It’s also why a lot of people report feeling god-fucking-awful after breakfast. The first meal of the day hits like a freight train sometimes.)

Does it have to be floor time? Or is just lying horizontal on a bed or couch (legs raised) acceptable?

Horizontal + legs raised, that’s what gets the blood back up to your core and helps your heart not have to work as hard. I just say floor because that’s where I usually end up from the looming syncope.
