Every single time I post any variation on “artists are human beings–yes, even well-known ones who make things a lot of people have heard of,” it always immediately attracts people who make comments like, “yeah! Be nice to fanfic authors, we do it for free!”

And it’s really fucking frustrating.

YES, be nice to fanfic authors, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the artists behind your favorite media. I’m talking about the people who make the things that fandoms form around.

Because for some fucking reason, tumblr thinks that “artists are human beings” stops being true the second there’s money involved, and it’s okay to aggressively harass people just because they made something that’s currently popular.

When I say “artists are human beings even when they make something you like a lot,” I’m talking about shit like actors being sexually harassed and performers being abused by “fans” until they delete their social media and so-called “fans” targeting a TV crew members over their stupid fucking ship wars.

I don’t care how big or well-known a piece of media is. I don’t care how justified you are in your fan rage. I don’t fucking care if you spent your life savings on merch for it.

The artists who made it are still human beings, and you don’t get to treat them like shit just because they’re well-known.
